Richard R. Dievendorf, Sr., age 88, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at Covenant Health Care – Cooper in Saginaw, following a period of declining health. Richard was born January 23, 1924 in Detroit, the son of the late Clarence and Mary (Shanahan) Dievendorf. He graduated from St. Anthony's Catholic High School in Detroit with the class of 1942. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and played drums for the Navy Band until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was united in marriage with the former Mary Dishman on June 16, 1945 in Detroit. She preceded him in death on September 23, 2000. Dick began work as an Assistant Manager for Woolworth's in Saginaw in 1951. He became manager of the Detroit Woolworth's store in 1952, and went on to manage stores in Findlay, Ohio, St. Clair Shores, Mansfield, Ohio and finally to Caro to manage the Woolworth's store there in 1970, retiring in 1986 after thirty-five years of service to the company. Richard was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro where he served for many years as an usher, the Caro Lions Club, and was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus - Caro Council 3224. He was also a singer and drummer for Denny and the Music Makers. Richard will be lovingly remembered above all as an entertainer that loved music, telling jokes and bringing smiles to everyone within earshot.
He was the loving father of three children and their spouses, Becky & John Bowman of Tempe, Arizona, Cathy & Glen Fillion of Muskegon, and Richard & Marcia Dievendorf of Caro; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Jack & Dana Bowman of Chandler, Arizona, Ryan & Kim Bowman of Phoenix, Arizona, Daniel & Erin Fillion of Lisbon, Portugal, Alison & Greg Puhalski of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, Dustin & Nida Fillion of Chicago, Illinois, Matthew & Amy Dievendorf of Washington, D.C., Joshua & Erika Dievendorf of Ann Arbor; eight great-grandchildren, Claire, Caitlin, Audrey, Nathan, Finn, Kellen, Vivian, and Zara; and many nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro with Rev. Stephen J. Fillion officiating. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Caro. The family will receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 10:00 a.m. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary Service on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the American Heart Association.
